  1. Dieter Fansite Updated

    October 17, 2004 by dafyd

Tom, the chief web bod over at Blood and Thunder, the Online Dieter Hecht Resource, has done a bit of redecorating.

The Online Dieter Hecht ResourceThe site looks nice and new in its grey-and-white colour scheme (hmm… like mine), and he’s updated some of his content. He’s reorganised the photo galleries, and promises to post to his blog more frequently (he’s had it since October 2003 and has only posted 11 times; I’ve had mine since March 2004 and this is the 67th post).

He has written a short but sweet introduction to the site:

Welcome to my site! I hope that you enjoy your visit and use the guestmap to interactively record your comments. Don’t miss the photo gallery, which you’ll find packed with snaps, and be sure to catch up on the latest entries in my blog.

    Let’s compare that to mine:

Hello and welcome to me online. Here you can find out everything you could possibly want to about moi, except stuff that I don’t want you to know. Hmm, interesting. Have a look around – I recommend the Blog if you want to know what’s going on in my head at the moment. You might like to have a look at the photos in the Gallery as well.

He’s done a nice little list of how to contact him:

    How to contact Tom

Great – nice and easy to use, especially when compared to my shoddy little thing:

    How to contact Me

Hmm. Don’t even get me started on the clipart.

Well, enough griping. I’ve not got any problems with people using my site for inspiration. At least he links back to me! Oh, and for the first time, his site appears to be written by him. No more “welcome to our website”. He obviously took notice of the post in which I mentioned his apparent insecurity…!

Anyway, well done Tom! A good redesign of a site is hard to pull off – which is why mine is staying as it is for the foreseeable future. Now let’s make sure that we see regular updates…!

Update: Hmmph. Tom made me change the button that I had on his site linking to my site. I’d made him a pretty one, specially for him, but he wanted the boring grey one. Make your mind up – the boring one on the left, or the fun one on the right?

Update 2: I’ve just spent the last half hour going over the code to the site with Tom, trying to sort out a couple of bugs. He’s using some website maker thingy called RapidWeaver, which produces some nice-looking pages but really, really bad code!

  2. Another Dafyd Jones

    September 28, 2004 by dafyd

Aargh! I was Googling for myself (cos I was bored, and I wanted to see if they actually listed my site yet), when I found this guy, called, strangely enough, Dafyd Jones:

Some weird guy called Dafyd Jones

The first listing for dafyd on Google is a photo gallery of a little person called Dafyd – I have no complaints about people naming themselves after me, but I’d rather they didn’t usurp my GoogleRank. Besides, his website breaks all the design rules laid down by Google. Hmmph. Anyway, here’s a picture of him:

    Some kid called Dafyd

  3. Travelling to Paris

    September 13, 2004 by dafyd

I’ve been travelling for 8 hours today, using 5 different transport systems (car – Midland Mainline – London Underground – Eurostar – Paris RER), and the only bits that caused any hassle or delay were the English trains. The Midland Mainline HST, supposedly a 90-minute journey, arrived in London 45 minutes late (that’s 50%…).

Then the building works at St Pancras meant that the train-underground connection was ridiculously difficult, and finally, to add insult to injury, the station where I was going to change Underground trains was closed.

Naturally, the other parts of the journey were absolutely problem free! Eurostar was dead on time departing and arriving. Travelling on Monday afternoon, I had half the carriage to myself – very nice!

At the other end, I walked through Gare du Nord to the RER platform to get the train to Sceaux … and it was there waiting (only 1 in 4 trains on the RER line B actually go to Sceaux).

To quote the advert … “don’t you love it when things just work?”

  4. Politics

OK (deep breath) … there are local and european elections on the 10th june, and me being me I thought it would be interesting to look at which party has the best website… then vote for them (hmm, interesting concept). But seriously, you simply have to go and visit the Official Monster Raving Loony Party’s website.

Labour, the Conservatives, and the Lib Dems have fairly bog standard sites, certain of which don’t even make it easy to link to them. However, because I am bored (and feel like wasting their bandwidth), here are some pretty pictures:

    The Conservative Party Website

    The Labour Party Website

If you need to register to vote – and I think it is really important that everyone who can vote does so (not just in Pop Idol) – you can do so at the Electoral Commission’s website.

In the States, they have some fantastic political websites … just look at George W Bush’s site (you can even buy ‘W’ t-shirts!)and, for balance, John Kerry’s. The best thing on the web I’ve seen recently is Amazon.com’s Buy-a-Candidate (well, sort of) page!
