  1. Erm

    January 28, 2008 by dafyd

Yes, it turns out that I’ve rather neglected my blogging duties recently. Since the beginning of December, in fact. Sorry about that. I could say that I’ve had too much to do, but that would be a bit of a fib. Truth be told, I’ve just not got round to it.

Potentially, when/if I remember, I have a few things to blog about… but that’ll come as it comes.

  2. Jobs

Spotted while searching Google for any sign of Penguin’s graduate recruitment programme*:

    HMRC Grad Recruitment

    Skills necessary: erm…

*which, incidentally, I’m told does exist, but nobody seems to know where, how, when or why

  3. Unfit for Purpose. Sound familiar?

In the old days, a minister would resign when his department “lost” 25 million sets of names, National Insurance numbers, bank account details…

Perhaps Alistair Darling should go and join David Miliband on the naughty step:

  4. Dafyd’s Handy Cooking Tip

    July 18, 2007 by dafyd

You know those bags of rice what they advertise on the telly from that nice Mr Uncle Ben? The ones that you stick in the microwave for a couple of minutes and when you take them out you have a whole meal ready for you?

Well, you know how it says on the packet to make an inch-long tear along the top of the bag? And how you should do that before putting the bag in the microwave?

They aren’t joking. (Oh, look, no question mark there.) If, by some strange quirk of fate or lapse in concentration your bag of rice lacks the aforementioned tear, it explodes. Inside the microwave. Showering the microwave with half-cooked rice.

Here endeth the public service announcement.

Yep, I’m still not in Montreal. It’s been another 10 days (one of which was, admittedly, a Bank Holiday), and I still have no work permit. Quite apart from the fact that I was supposed to start work last Monday, the Canadian Grand Prix is in a fortnight and I’d really like to beat the tourists and the expensive plane tickets…

Anyway, I thought I’d drag myself away from staring at the letterbox and post something. So here it is.

Soon (when I get round to it) I’ll write something about Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (pretty awesome) and The Lord of the Rings the musical (totally bonkers, but also pretty awesome). I will, I promise.

  6. Québec Update, Part the Second

    May 19, 2007 by dafyd

The Canadian High Commission updated its website today (or yesterday, but I’m pretty certain it was today). Previously, as I said on Thursday, there was no indication of how long one should wait for a work permit application, just a vague “most are dealt with in three weeks” kind of statistic.

Now, as well as changing the yellow background to white and tidying up a little (just a little – it’s now slightly easier to find what you’re looking for), they’ve added this little gem: “the average processing time for a fully completed, standard application is approximately 4 to 6 weeks.” So, double what it was four weeks ago, when I submitted my application.

    Gits.

In the meantime, I have a little bit of 1990s Canadian nostalgia to keep me going, from the legen-wait for it-dary How I Met Your Mother:

You need the free Macromedia Flash Player to watch this video. Download it here.

If you’re reading this in a feedreader, or in Facebook or the like, you’ll have to click through to the actual post. Make sure you do, though – it’ll make your day!

Umm… I just deleted the template that generates the individual blog posts here. And I can’t find the copy I had stored on my computer.

I think I’ve pieced it back together, but if something doesn’t seem to work properly, drop me an email.

And keep an eye out for something totally new and exciting coming in the next week!

  8. Preempting

    October 23, 2005 by dafyd

Sometime within the next 30 days I will make a stupid mistake.

I don’t know what yet – I can tell you now that it won’t be missing a train – but no doubt it will make me look so ridiculously incompetent that people from far and wide will come and laugh.

So to preempt that event – and also because David can’t access my blog – I present this post. To laugh at my stupid mistake. That hasn’t happened yet.

    I feel such a fool already. If only I hadn’t done… something.

Anyway – feel free to laugh at my amateurish mistake in the comments.

And if when I do make such a mistake – you won’t need to pick on me. Cos you’ll have already done it.
