  1. The very end [49/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

So. There were 48 posts in 24 hours.

I’ve talked about 21 books, 8 films, and (presumably) 19 other things.

A word of thanks must go to the Blogathon team who organised the whole thing with so much aplomb and kept us entertained throughout.

Almost $100,000 has been raised by the ‘Thon, and you can continue to pledge for a bit longer, in case you missed the whole thing. Please do!

Those of you who have already pledged to sponsor me will shortly be receiving details of how to donate your promised monies to BookAid.

So – see you back here next year!

Incidentally, the “Volkswagen Safran” adverts I was talking about? They’re actually for the Vauxhall Meriva. Very effective, obviously.

  2. Fin (ish) [48/48]

The problem with posting every 30 minutes is that you actually need 49 posts to make 24 hours (cos you start at 0). Post 49 will be a round up, but in the meantime, I thought I’d start to think about how I’d do this next year, if I do.

The theme worked for the first 12 hours, but then I ran out of books. Which isn’t terribly useful. Perhaps I should plan better in advance…

Maybe next year I’ll find someone to blog with me. Sure, Skype and MSN keep you company in the wee small hours, but they’re no substitute for a real live person.

More energy-food-sort-of-stuff might be nice. I should have thought of that, really.

But I would definitely do it againn. I’m not too sure where I’ll be this time next year, but provisionally keep this date in your diaries!

  3. Zoom zoom [47/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

My blog station in the lounge has been taken over by people watching the Formula 1. Tsk.

I have to say, though, I’m always impressed by the incredibly hi-tech stuff that happens at these races – on one of the first corners of this race, a car was knocked into the air by another, landed, and carried on perfectly fine. How they can achieve such safety at such high speeds is beyond me.

  4. Lunch [46/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

Oops – a bit late, following a stop for food.

My body clock has gone all strange – I’m convinced it’s still Saturday. I’ve lost a day somewhere. I feel robbed.

Anyhoo – breaking news: there’s some sort of fire at the 007 stage at Pinewood, where the new Bond movie is still in production. The BBC doesn’t seem to know much more

  5. Ice Cream [45/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

Today’s Observer Magazine has an interview with Wayne Vineer, an ice cream van man from Guildford. He provides us with such insights as…

Dads are tight. They say to their children, “We’ll have one later, when we come back,” but they never do. And with young couples it’s almost always the girlfriend who pays.

If you look them in the eye and as, “Small, medium or large?”, 90 per cent of adults will go for the medium.

For 26 sunny weeks of the year I have no social life whatsoever.

    Good to know.

  6. Brainwork [44/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

Trying to do a sudoku after having been awake for 30 hours is not a good idea.

Just thought you’d like to know…

Actually, I’ve almost completed it. It is, admittedly, an easy one.

  7. Rob’s being a slug [43/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

…he was saving this until he was out of ideas.

Sounds like a good plan – I can pretend to be sluglike too.

  8. 20.5 hrs down… [42/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

    …and I’m feeling really tired.

And I’ve pretty much run out of things to write about.

You know how sometimes when you close you eyes you know you’re going to fall asleep? I’m at that stage.

  9. Superman = Jesus? [41/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

    Spotted at BBC News:

An all-powerful father sends his son to Earth to save mankind by showing them the “light”. The son is able to perform miracles. He “dies” and is born again.

Sound familiar? It might do, it’s the plot of the new movie Superman Returns. And in the blogs and internet forums there has been a maelstrom of debate on the parallels between Superman and Jesus Christ.

Hmm… I’d never really noticed it, but there certainly are parallels. That said, though…

“One of the appealing things is that while they may remind us of certain religious figures or ideas the fact that they are not of any one religion is what has allowed them to be embraced around the world.

“And if you like Superman rather than Batman it is unlikely you will get into an argument with someone and end up dead.”

  10. The Now Show [40/48]

    July 30, 2006 by dafyd

Steve Punt and Hugh DennisIf you don’t already, you really should start listening to the Now Show on Radio 4. It is the BBC’s best-performing podcast, and is, frankly, very very funny.

Steve Punt, Hugh Dennis, John Holmes and occasionally Marcus Brigstocke provide satirical commentary on the week’s events, with musical entertainment from Mitch Benn.

Alas, it’s a couple of weeks too late, but the “Chanson de Zinedine Zidane” was inspired. If I get a chance, I’ll extract it from that week’s podcast and post it. You really should hear it.
