  1. Vee-Dub in da house

    August 21, 2006 by dafyd

Ooh, ooh – I just had to share these US commercials for the Volkswagen GTi – starring none other than Lev Andropov (aka Peter Stormare) as a mad, German, anti-Pimp-My-Ride VW engineer. Genius.

There are two more of these adverts on Google Video – the Crate, and the Catapult.

  2. Lloyd Webber-ing

Just a quick post to make sure that I don’t forget to write up Evita and Whistle Down the Wind from the 10th August. Otherwise, I’ll never remember. And that would be bad. Prod me.

Trailer for a new Robin Williams film – looks pretty awesome. Jon Stewart for President, anyone?

  4. University Challen

    August 8, 2006 by dafyd

The 2006-7 series (the 13th, if you’re interested) of University Challenge started on BBC2 last night. The first match was a fairly gripping game between the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and Bristol University. With just a couple of questions to go, the two teams were level-pegging with 185 points each.

But I don’t know what happened next. Either the BBC was running late or our PVR was running fast (most likely the latter, piece of rubbish that it is). It stopped recording. Two minutes from the end. Aargh.

So… did anyone else happen to watch it? Could you provide a question-by-question account of the last couple of questions? Even better, did you record it? Anyone?

And a date for your diary: Monday 25th September, 8.30pm. Durham University may or may not be on University Challenge. I couldn’t really say…

  5. Last.fm weirdness

    August 8, 2006 by dafyd

    I love Last.fm. It rocks.

For those of you who don’t know, it works as a plugin to iTunes or Windows Media Player or whatever, and keeps a record of the tracks you play. It then generates a profile for you with details of your favourite artists, albums, tracks, and so on.

But even better, it offers a “Personal Radio” feature, which takes tracks from your profile and creates a stream of your favourites and other recommended choons. Which is rather cool.

But I’m intrigued by something I’ve just spotted: have a look at the details of my top tracks listened to last week. Generally, it looks about right. But then looking down the list, there are some tracks that not only do I not own, I’ve never even heard. Jessica Simpson? I think not. Three Dog Night? Well, actually, I’ve just downloaded them… but I’d never (consciously) heard any of their music until today. The Spice Girls? Give me some credit.

So where are these phantom tracks coming from? Bit of a mystery, that.

  6. Al-Kitaab

    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
    5. Don’t you dare dig for that “cool” or “intellectual” book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
    6. Tag three people.

Here we go, then – from this terribly exciting tome:

When it occurs at the beginning of a sentence, إﻥﹼ marks the following noun as the topic of the sentence. إﻥﹼ occurs frequently in expository texts (and less often in narrative ones) because the topic or topics under discussion (rather than actions or events) are the focus of the text.

Gramatically, إﻥﹼ belongs to a group of articles called إﻥﹼ و أﺨوﺍﺘﻬﺎ.

    You asked!

Anyhoo – next to be tagged: David, Tom and, umm, someone else. Anyone? Post in the comments, if you feel like it.

And for this post, I learned a new skill: bi-directional, bi-lingual, multi-character-set HTML coding. Fun.
