My blog is powered by Movable Type, which is software that you have to host on your own website – it’s quite complicated to set up, but when you’ve got it working, it’s really easy to use. If you have a website – and web space – an alternative to Movable Type is WordPress – which does the same sort of thing with some different features.

If you don’t have a website – or don’t necessarily want the cost and hassle of having one – you need a hosted blog service – the two best known (and best, full stop) are Blogger (owned by Google) and TypePad (from the guys who make Movable Type).

As for the design – I did that myself. But there are plenty of templates available (especially for WordPress) that you can adapt freely.
